Out of the Box

How much of an object belongs to the object itself, and how much belongs to the space that surrounds it? Out of the Box begins with this question, using a single box as a framework for creating different compositions.

Inspired by the photographic universe of Szilveszter Makó, the box remains unchanged throughout the project. The only variables are the objects it contains and the relationships they establish with one another. Position, light, scale and distance are enough to transform the atmosphere and alter the way each piece is perceived.

By reducing the space to a single setting, the project shifts the focus from the objects themselves to the context that surrounds them. The same object is never perceived in exactly the same way; its meaning shifts according to what accompanies it, the way it is presented, or the void that separates it from the other elements. Composition therefore ceases to be a purely formal decision and instead becomes a way of constructing meaning.
